Therapy for Trauma and PTSD
If you have been through something that still affects you, whether it happened recently or a long time ago, the right kind of therapy can help. The therapists listed below have specific training in working with trauma.
Trauma is not just about what happened. It is about what your nervous system learned during and after it. That is why talking through events in detail is not always the best place to start. A trauma-trained therapist will go at your pace and prioritise your sense of safety throughout.
Several therapy models have strong evidence for trauma. EMDR (eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing) is recommended by NICE for PTSD and works well for many people. Trauma-focused CBT is also well supported, and somatic approaches such as Sensorimotor Psychotherapy or Internal Family Systems work well where the trauma sits more in the body.
When looking for a trauma therapist, check that they specifically describe trauma training in their profile. EMDR, for example, requires a full accredited course on top of core therapist training. A profile that simply mentions trauma in a list of specialisms may not be enough.
