Therapy for Depression
Depression can show up as low mood, exhaustion, loss of interest in things you used to enjoy, or a sense of being stuck. The therapists listed here regularly support clients through depression, from short, low-mood episodes to longer-standing struggles.
Therapy for depression is well supported by NICE guidance and a large body of research. CBT and IPT (interpersonal therapy) have the strongest short-term evidence, while psychodynamic and integrative therapy tend to be helpful where depression has roots in early experiences or unresolved loss.
If your depression feels heavy or persistent, it is worth talking to your GP as well as a therapist. Medication and therapy together often work better than either alone for moderate to severe depression. A good therapist will support you to make that decision in your own time.
When choosing a therapist, look for someone who describes depression as one of the areas they work with most. Their profile should also describe their approach in plain language. If it reads like a brochure, keep looking.
